Green Initiatives

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is the most recognized and accepted North American standard for rating the environmental friendliness of the design, construction, operation and sustainability of buildings. The building will be one of the most environmentally friendly recreational facilities in the country. It has been designed and built to include many energy saving and environmentally friendly features. This includes;

  • A green roof
  • A heat recovery system that will reuse the heat from the ice refrigeration system to provide heat in the stands and dressing rooms
  • The latest most energy efficient lighting technology
  • Rain water collection system that would reuse water collected from the roof for ice resurfacing

The environmental components of this facility are estimated to save the City of Kitchener an estimated $125,000 per year in operating costs.
